Thornbury is well known for its wonderful display of flowers, especially throughout the summer. The High Street is festooned with hanging baskets and flower displays adorn many shops and houses. Turn any corner of the town and there you will find a colourful display.
The town has been entering the regional Britain in Bloom competition for many years and every time has gained a place in its category. This year, 2003, it was once again the proud winner of its category, securing the return of the Portman Cup to Thornbury.
To reach this goal there is a Thornbury in Bloom Committee comprising of volunteers who work tirelessly at the beginning of the year to raise funds for the forthcoming summer planting of displays. In early summer they then can be found planting up boxes and various other containers to be placed around the town. All their hard work gives pleasure to the people of the town and makes Thornbury an attractive and colourful town to visit.
